How this works in your browser
The tip is the bill multiplied by your chosen percentage, the total is the sum of both, and the per-person amount is that total divided by the number paying, with every figure rounded to two decimal places for display. Rounding at the display stage rather than during the arithmetic matters on a split bill: rounding each person's share before summing can leave the total a few cents adrift from what is owed. Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Convention in the United States is pre-tax, since tax is not part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total because it is easier, and the difference is small on an ordinary bill. Either is defensible; tipping on the post-tax figure is simply slightly more generous.
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is standard for restaurant table service, with 20 becoming the common default. Elsewhere the expectation is very different: much of Europe rounds up or adds around 10 percent, and in Japan tipping can cause genuine awkwardness. Check local norms when travelling.
Does everyone pay the same when splitting?

Is a service charge the same as a tip?
