How this works in your browser
Camera frames or uploaded image pixels are drawn onto a canvas and handed to a decoding library running in your browser. Unlike a QR code, which is a two-dimensional grid with position markers to establish orientation, a 1D barcode is read by scanning across a line and measuring the relative widths of alternating bars and spaces, then matching those width patterns against the encoding rules of each supported format. That is why alignment matters so much more here: the scan line has to cross every bar cleanly, and the quiet margins either side are what tell the decoder where the pattern starts and stops. A checksum digit is verified before a result is returned, so a partial misread is rejected rather than reported as a wrong number.

Do I need to grant camera access?

Is my camera feed uploaded anywhere?
No. Barcode decoding happens locally in your browser.
Will this tell me what the product is?
No, and that is the honest boundary. It returns the number printed on the item, nothing more. A barcode contains only an identifier; the product name, price and description live in a retailer’s or manufacturer’s database. Looking the returned number up in a product database is the second step, and a separate one.
Why is my barcode not scanning?
Usually the angle or the framing. A 1D barcode is read by measuring bar widths along a single line, so the scan line has to cross all the bars: hold the camera square to the code, fill a good portion of the frame with it, and include the white margins either side. Curved packaging and glossy reflections are the other two common culprits.
Which formats does it handle?
The common 1D families, including UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8, EAN-13 and Code 128, which between them cover retail products, books and most logistics labels.
Can I scan from a photo instead?
Yes. Uploading an image works without granting camera permission, which helps when the barcode is on something awkward to hold up to a camera.
