How this works in your browser
This is a convolution filter running over the image on a canvas. Each pixel is recalculated from itself and its immediate neighbours using a kernel that adds weight to the centre pixel and subtracts from those around it, which amplifies the difference wherever brightness already changes quickly, in other words at edges. Flat areas, where neighbouring pixels are similar, are left essentially untouched. This explains both the strength and the ceiling of the technique: it can only act on transitions that were recorded, so it cannot invent detail, and pushing the weighting too hard overshoots on either side of an edge and produces the bright fringe known as a halo.

Can this fix a very blurry photo?
Not fully. Sharpening enhances existing edges; it cannot recreate detail that is genuinely missing from an out-of-focus or low-resolution source.
Can I control the strength of the effect?
Yes, a strength slider controls how aggressive the sharpening is.
Will this add visible noise or halos?
Pushed too far, sharpening can introduce a slight halo around edges. Start with a lower strength and increase gradually.
Why can sharpening not fix an out-of-focus photo?
Because it does not add detail, it increases contrast at edges that are already there. An out-of-focus lens never recorded the fine detail in the first place, so there is nothing for the filter to enhance. What you get instead is exaggerated contrast on the soft edges, which reads as a crunchy, over-processed look rather than a sharper photo.
When does sharpening genuinely help?
Two situations especially. After downscaling a large image, since resampling averages pixels together and slightly softens edges. And on scans, which almost always come out a little flat. In both cases the detail exists and is merely muted, which is exactly what sharpening is for.
Should I sharpen before or after resizing?
After. Sharpening first and then downscaling averages your sharpened edges back out and can leave artefacts behind. Resize to final dimensions, then apply a light sharpen as the last step.
