How this works in your browser
pdf-lib draws each number into the page content stream using one of the standard PDF base fonts, Helvetica or Times. Those fonts are guaranteed to exist in every conforming PDF reader, which means nothing has to be embedded: the file barely grows and the text renders identically everywhere. Because the numbers are written as vector text operators rather than rasterised, they stay crisp at any zoom level and remain selectable and searchable. Positioning is calculated from each page's own dimensions, so a document mixing A4 and Letter pages still gets its numbers placed consistently relative to each page edge.

Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?

Yes. You can set the first page to skip, so numbering begins visibly on page 2 while the cover remains clean.
What fonts are available?
The tool uses the standard PDF Helvetica and Times fonts which are always available without embedding. They render cleanly on all PDF viewers.
Will the numbers overlap my existing content?
They can, if your document already has content in the margin. The numbers are stamped at a fixed position rather than reflowing around the page, so check the corner you have chosen is actually empty, or pick the opposite one.
Are the numbers searchable and selectable?
Yes. They are written as real vector text rather than drawn as images, so they stay sharp at any zoom, can be selected and copied, and are read correctly by screen readers.
Can I number a document I have just merged?
That is the most common reason to use this. Merging preserves each source document's own printed numbers, which then run 1-2-3-1-2-3 through the combined file. Adding a fresh sequence gives the merged document one continuous set.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
